Los Angeles: Mark Margolis, the actor who portrayed the villainous wheelchair-bound cartel leader Hector Salamanca in popular TV shows “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” has passed away at the age of 83. His family shared the sad news on Friday.
He died on Thursday at a hospital in New York after a brief illness, surrounded by his wife and son, as stated in the family’s statement.
Bryan Cranston, the star of “Breaking Bad,” expressed his sadness on Instagram and paid tribute to his dear friend’s passing.
People said that Mark Margolis was not only a great actor but also a kind and wonderful person. He was fun and engaging when he wasn’t acting, but when he played roles like Hector Salamanca in “Breaking Bad” and “Your Honor,” he could be quite intimidating and scary on the set.
Bob Odenkirk, who stars in the show “Better Call Saul,” described Mark Margolis as having a strong and impressive presence on the screen.
The official “Breaking Bad” social media account praised Mark Margolis for his immense talent. With his eyes, a bell, and very few words, he turned Hector Salamanca into one of the most unforgettable characters in TV history.
In the show, Mark Margolis played a character called the patriarch of the Salamanca family, involved in drug smuggling. He faced a stroke after being poisoned by a rival, which left him only able to communicate by tapping a bell with his finger.
Mark Margolis was born in Philadelphia in 1939 and later moved to New York to become an actor.
He had a successful career as a character actor, taking on supporting roles in movies like “Scarface,” “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” and “Black Swan,” as well as the HBO series “Oz.”
In 2012, his excellent performance in “Breaking Bad” earned him a nomination for an Emmy award.
Mark Margolis is survived by his wife, Jacqueline, whom he was married to for 61 years. They have one child named Morgan and three grandsons.
