Chandrayaan 3, the third mission to the moon by ISRO, is scheduled to launch on Friday. The goal is to achieve a soft landing on the lunar surface, joining the exclusive group of countries that have successfully done so. The launch will take place on July 14 from a spaceport.
The soft landing is planned for late August. Unfortunately, the previous mission, Chandrayaan-2, was not able to achieve the desired soft landing in 2019. The new mission aims to master the technology of landing gently on the moon and make India the fourth country to achieve this.
Chandrayaan-3 consists of a propulsion module, a lander module, and a rover. Its objective is to develop and demonstrate new technologies needed for future interplanetary missions. The countdown for the launch is expected to begin on Thursday, with the rocket scheduled to lift off on July 14.
The rocket being used, called LVM3-M4 or “fat boy” by ISRO scientists, has a successful track record and is the largest and heaviest in India’s space program. The launch window in July is chosen because the earth and moon are closer during this time.
The mission aims to demonstrate various capabilities such as reaching the moon’s orbit, making a soft landing, and studying the lunar surface with a rover. The landing is planned for the moon’s south pole region, where there might be a possibility of water.
Chandrayaan-3 also carries experimental payloads to study the Earth from lunar orbit. The mission is significant as it will contribute to future interplanetary missions and enhance our understanding of the moon’s surface.
