Hong Kong singer Coco Lee dies at 48

Coco Lee, a famous singer from Asia, passed away at the age of 48. She was born in Hong Kong and moved to the United States when she was a child. Coco released albums in both Mandarin and English.
She was known for her role as the voice of the main character in the Mandarin version of Disney’s movie Mulan. She also performed a song from the soundtrack of the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon at the Oscars in 2001.
Coco had been in a coma since she attempted suicide over the weekend, according to her sisters. They shared on Facebook that she had been struggling with depression for a few years. She tried to take her own life at home on Sunday and was taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, she passed away on Wednesday.
Coco became popular in the Mandopop music scene in 1994 with two Mandarin albums. In the following year, she released an English-language album and another Mandarin album.
In addition to her music, Coco sang the Mandarin version of the theme song from Mulan called “Reflection.” One of her songs, “Before I Fall in Love,” was featured in the soundtrack of the Hollywood film Runaway Bride, which starred Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.
Coco had many notable performances throughout her career, including a benefit concert in South Korea in 1999, where she sang alongside Michael Jackson and other artists. She also served as a judge on TV talent shows, such as Chinese Idol.
In a recent Instagram post on New Year’s Eve, Coco shared that she had faced significant challenges in her life and described the previous year, 2022, as incredibly difficult. Her sisters expressed their gratitude for her contributions to music and her efforts to pave the way for Chinese singers in the international music scene.
‘Trademark bright smile’
Coco Lee released her latest single, called “Tragic,” on February 14 of this year.
In March, she mentioned on Facebook that she had surgery on her pelvis and thigh. She had hurt her leg during dance practice at the end of last year.
In 2011, Coco Lee got married to Bruce Rockowitz, who used to be the CEO of a big supply chain company called Li & Fung, based in Hong Kong. Bruce has two daughters from his previous marriage.
There were rumors about Coco and Bruce splitting up around three years ago, but Coco never talked about it.
On Wednesday, Coco’s sisters wrote, “As we remember Coco, let’s also share her bright smile, honesty, and kindness with everyone around us. Let’s fulfill Coco’s wish that those close to her will feel her love and joy.”
