The Irish singer, Sinead O’Connor, who became famous for tearing a picture of Pope John Paul II, has passed away at 56 years old. She leaves behind her three children. Her family has asked for privacy during this sad time.
Prime Minister Taoiseach Leo Varadkar paid his respects and expressed his sadness about her death. He said her music was loved all over the world, and she had an unmatched and extraordinary talent.
Foreign Minister Tánaiste Micheál Martin also praised her, calling her one of the greatest musical icons, and said that the people of Ireland cherished her deeply.
Sinead O’Connor made ten studio albums, and one of her songs, ‘Nothing Compares 2 U,’ was a big hit and won a top award at the Billboard Music Awards in 1990.
Her beautiful version of ballads got her three Grammy nominations, and her songs reached the number-one spot on music charts all over the world. In 1991, Rolling Stone magazine honoured her as the Artist of the Year.
Recently, she received the first-ever Classic Irish Album award at the RTÉ Choice Music Awards earlier this year.
In 1992, Sinead O’Connor caused a lot of talk when she tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II on a TV show. She did this to protest against sexual abuses in the Roman Catholic Church.
Even after people asked her to say sorry, she refused and said she wasn’t sorry because she thought what she did was great. She also said she felt traumatized and treated badly.
Sinead O’Connor also made more people talk when she didn’t want to sing the U.S. national anthem before her concerts. She talked to Oprah Winfrey and said she had bipolar disorder and felt really sad and even thought about ending her life.
She showed support for Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus when they were facing a lot of public pressure and attention.
