After a highly praised third season, it’s official that Only Murders in the Building will be back for a fourth season on Hulu.

The comedy series, featuring a cast of well-known stars, has become one of Hulu’s most successful shows in recent times, maintaining an average rating of 97% across its three seasons on Rotten Tomatoes.

The storyline revolves around Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short), three individuals who are strangers to each other but share a common passion for true crime. They find themselves entangled in a criminal conspiracy, leading to various comedic situations.

When Is Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Releasing?

The official confirmation for Only Murders in the Building Season 4 was shared on the series’ official Instagram page. The announcement was made alongside the Season 3 finale, with a post stating, “Only Murders in the Building is coming back for Season 4.”

Shortly after, on October 9, 2023, reports revealed that a writers’ room had been established to work on Season 4. This suggests that the upcoming episodes are on track, and filming is expected to commence later in the same year. If the development timeline aligns with Season 3’s schedule, which saw a renewal in July 2022 and filming starting six months later, Season 4 could potentially start filming as early as April 2024.

Historically, the show’s production timeline has followed a pattern. Season 2, filmed from December 2021 to March 2022, premiered on Hulu on June 28, 2022. Similarly, Season 3, filmed from January to April 2023, was released on August 8, 2023. If Season 4 maintains a similar timeframe, it could be expected to premiere in late 2024, possibly arriving on Hulu in November or December.

Who’s Cast In Only Murders in the Building Season 4?

Fans can look forward to seeing much of the familiar cast from Only Murders in the Building Seasons 1-3 returning for Season 4. The main stars, including Selena Gomez (Mabel Mora), Steve Martin (Charles-Haden Savage), and Martin Short (Oliver Putnam), are set to headline the upcoming season, maintaining their central roles since the show’s inception.

The returning cast is expected to include other characters like Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton), Will (Ryan Broussard), Oliver’s son, and the sharp-tongued Uma (Jackie Hoffman), among others, all adding to the beloved ensemble.

However, there are some uncertainties regarding the return of Season 3 stars Meryl Streep and Jesse Williams, who joined the series in the previous season. They played romantic roles alongside Short’s Oliver and Gomez’s Mabel, respectively. Co-creator John Hoffman addressed this uncertainty, pointing to an Instagram post where Streep expressed her excitement for Season 4.

In Hoffman’s words, “Nothing would make [him] happier” than to have both Streep and Williams back for the upcoming season. He shared Streep’s positive sentiments from her wrap for Season 3, expressing a desire for their return due to the positive impact they had on the show.

  • Steve Martin – Charles-Haden Savage
  • Martin Short – Oliver Putnam
  • Selena Gomez – Mabel Mora
  • Michael Cyril Creighton – Howard
  • Ryan Broussard – Will
  • Jackie Hoffman – Uma
  • Da’Vine Joy Randolph
  • Detective Dee Williams
  • Jason Veasey – Jonathan
  • James Caverly – Theo
  • Jane Lynch – Sazz Pataki

What Will Happen in Only Murders in the Building Season 4?

Although Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building neatly concluded its central case, it left fans with a glimpse of what’s next. After Mabel, Oliver, and Charles solve the murder of Paul Rudd’s character, Ben Gilroy, and the culprit is apprehended, they celebrate. However, the season takes an unexpected turn with the murder of Jane Lynch’s character, Sazz, in the closing moments.

Given Sazz’s close relationship with Oliver (as his stunt double on the in-universe series Brazzos), it’s anticipated that Season 4 will revolve around solving Sazz’s murder. According to series co-creator John Hoffman, the upcoming season will focus on the “repercussions” of Mabel, Oliver, and Charles’ Only Murders podcast. This could connect with the death of Sazz, exploring the impact of what they’ve created and how the world perceives it.

Hoffman describes Season 4 as a “challenging line to walk” for the main characters as they grapple with the consequences of their actions and what it all signifies. The podcast and their past actions will play a significant role in this exploration.

Regarding the show’s setting, Hoffman expresses a love for New York but hints at a potential departure from its familiar surroundings. While emphasizing the richness and depth of the city, he also notes the importance of not being afraid to explore new settings. Although he doesn’t confirm a shift away from New York, Hoffman suggests that any change in scenery should be driven by the story, not just for the sake of novelty.

While Season 4’s location remains uncertain, Hoffman hints at a desire to “shake up the look” of the show while ensuring it aligns with the narrative. He acknowledges the many loose ends and connections established in Season 3, leaving room for potential developments. Additionally, Hoffman playfully mentions Scott Bakula, suggesting the possibility of his involvement in future seasons.
