Netflix and Zack Snyder are teaming up following the massive success of his movie “Army of the Dead.” After a long stint with Warner Bros and DC, Snyder has found a new creative home with Netflix, where he is set to bring a range of exciting new projects to life.

His next film, “Rebel Moon,” is generating buzz as an epic two-part project with the potential for spin-off properties.

Interestingly, Snyder, a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast, originally conceived “Rebel Moon” as a Star Wars film. He envisioned it as a more mature and unique take on George Lucas’s universe.

However, this idea was shelved after Disney acquired LucasFilm in 2012. Subsequently, Snyder struck a deal with Deborah Snyder’s production company, Stone Quarry, and Netflix to transform “Rebel Moon” into an entirely new and original universe.

“Rebel Moon” marks a departure for Zack Snyder into a distinct subgenre of science fiction. The story unfolds in a peaceful colony located on the edge of a distant galaxy. This once-tranquil settlement faces an existential threat from the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius.

To fend off this grave danger, the colony sends out a young female dispatch rider named Kora, who has a complex history. Her mission is to seek assistance from warriors on neighboring planets.

While further details about the cast, trailer, release date, and plot are eagerly anticipated, “Rebel Moon” promises to be an exciting addition to the realm of sci-fi fantasy.

In this article, we will guide everything you need to know about the Rebel Moon Release Date, Cast, Plotline, and Everything We Know

Rebel Moon Release Date

Rebel Moon” is set to make its debut on Netflix on December 22. This release date follows years of development, dating all the way back to 2012, and initial plans for the project as a TV series. The film’s production also involved an extensive shooting schedule that spanned over 150 days.

While there will be a limited theatrical release for “Rebel Moon,” specific details about this theatrical run have not been provided at this time.

In an interview with Polygon, Zack Snyder mentioned that he wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about a theatrical release, which could be a factor contributing to the decision for a more limited theatrical release.

This suggests that the primary focus of the film is its streaming release on Netflix. Nonetheless, fans of Zack Snyder’s work will have the opportunity to enjoy “Rebel Moon” both in theaters and on the streaming platform.

Zack Snyder’s last Netflix movie, “Army of the Dead,” played in some theaters one week before it came to Netflix.

If “Rebel Moon” does the same thing, it means that people in a few American cities might watch it in theaters on Friday, December 15.

Will Rebel Moon Have a Theatrical Release?

“Rebel Moon” is going to show in some theaters for a short time before it’s available on Netflix. We don’t know the exact dates or how many theaters will have it yet. Zack Snyder’s last Netflix movie, “Army of the Dead,” was in about 600 theaters in the US for one week in May 2021. “Rebel Moon” will probably do something similar.

What is ‘Rebel Moon’ about?

“Rebel Moon” takes inspiration from classic movies like “Seven Samurai,” “Star Wars,” and “Excalibur.” The story revolves around a team of rebel warriors who unite to oppose the corrupt government, known as the Mother World, and its army called the Imperium. The Mother World has committed a terrible crime by assassinating the king, queen, and daughter of the world.

Zack Snyder has had this idea in his mind for many years, and he began working on the script for “Rebel Moon” about three to four years ago. This creative process started after he finished making his Netflix zombie film, “Army of the Dead.”

The movie will be released in two parts in December 2023 and April 2024

“Rebel Moon” will be split into two parts.

The first part, “Rebel Moon: Part One — A Child of Fire,” will come out on Netflix on December 22, 2023. Then, the second part, “Rebel Moon: Part Two — The Scargiver,” will be available for streaming on Netflix four months later, on April 19, 2024. The names of these parts are taken from the script of the movie.

Deborah, one of the people involved in making the movie, said it was important to release the two parts close together. They didn’t want fans to have to wait a whole year or more for the second part. Zack, the director, mentioned that “Rebel Moon” is split into two parts so they can take enough time to properly explain why this group of warriors is coming together to fight.

Who Is Cast in Rebel Moon?

In “Rebel Moon,” Sofia Boutella takes on the role of Kora, a young woman burdened with the responsibility of assembling a defense force to oppose Regent Balisarius’ forces. Sofia Boutella is best known for her performance as Gazelle in the action spy comedy “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and as Jaylah in the sci-fi action film “Star Trek Beyond.” Her impressive film credits also include “Atomic Blonde,” “Climax,” “Hotel Artemis,” and “The Mummy.”

Anthony Hopkins, a two-time Oscar winner, lends his voice to the character Jimmy, a JC1435 sentient mechanized robot with a history of protecting a defeated king. Snyder described Jimmy as a ‘wild card’ on a journey of self-discovery, drawing a comparison to the Arthurian legend of Lancelot, adding an intriguing element to the sci-fi fantasy film. Anthony Hopkins is renowned for his acclaimed portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in “The Silence of the Lambs” and its sequels, as well as his role in “Mission: Impossible II.” He secured his second Academy Award in 2021 for his leading role in “The Father.”

Djimon Hounsou joins the cast as General Titus, a character with details that are currently under wraps. Hounsou is a highly accomplished actor known for his roles in films like “Blood Diamond” and “Amistad.” He’s also a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), appearing in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Captain Marvel” as Korath the Pursuer, among other notable credits such as “Shazam,” “In America,” and “Furious 7.”

Ed Skrein portrays Regent Balisarius, the formidable and cunning interplanetary warlord with intentions to besiege a colony in a distant galaxy. Skrein is recognized for his role as Daario Naharis in the third season of “Game of Thrones” and for his portrayal of the villain Ajax (Francis) in “Deadpool.” His filmography also includes “Born A King,” “Alita: Battle Angel,” and his appearance in Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

The cast of “Rebel Moon” also features Charlie Hunnam as Kai, a mercenary starship pilot; Ray Fisher and Cleopatra Coleman as Darrian and Devra Bloodaxe; Michiel Huisman as Gunnar, a farmer and friend of Devra; Jena Malone as Harmada, a spider warrior; Staz Nair as the blacksmith Tarak; Doona Bae as the cyborg swordmaster Nemesis; E. Duffy as Millius; and Fra Fee as Regent Balisarius. Additionally, the film includes Stuart Martin, Corey Stoll, Cary Elwes, Alfonso Herrera, Rhian Rees, and Ray Porter in undisclosed roles.
