Karan Johar, known for directing movies like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…, is great at creating stunning and impressive cinematic scenes.
However, in his latest comedy-drama, there’s a bit of a problem when the movie tries to make fun of the super-rich and not-so-smart Punjabi hero named Rocky (played by Ranveer Singh). Rocky is the heir to a big sweet business in Delhi and is very confident about himself.
He even says, “I look like Prada and Gucci got together to give birth to me,” while surrounded by many female dancers who admire him a lot.
It’s a bit tricky for the film to make fun of extravagance when it’s also showing it in a big way.
In this story, there’s a strong and determined TV journalist named Rani (played by Alia Bhatt), who is from Bengal. She teams up with Rocky to play matchmaker, even though they didn’t plan it beforehand.
Rocky’s grandfather (played by Dharmendra) had a bad fall years ago, and now he’s sometimes calling out a woman’s name. Surprisingly, that woman turns out to be Rani’s grandmother (played by Shabana Azmi).
Turns out, they had a wonderful time together at a poetry symposium in the 1970s.
While trying to bring the old couple back together, Rani and Rocky start developing feelings for each other, despite being quite different intellectually.
Rani beautifully describes her emotions, saying, “A protein shake in one hand and your shirt wide open and my heart got in the way.”
In this love story, Rocky and Rani face a big problem because their families don’t get along. They compare their families to “backseat drivers” who try to control their lives.
To see if they can make their relationship work, Rocky and Rani decide to spend three months each in the other’s home as a trial period – kind of like trying before deciding.
The movie, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, is interesting because it tries to show the clash between modern ideas and old traditions.
This leads to some unusual and dramatic conflicts, like Rocky speaking against cancel culture or feeling uncomfortable while shopping for bras, which Rani’s mother scolds him for.
After many funny and intense confrontations, the story ends with lots of rose petals and a finale that’s even more colorful than Barbie’s world.
