After the success of Scream VI in theaters, the famous horror series is getting ready for Scream 7. The directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are stepping down, and Christopher Landon is taking over as the new director.
You might know Landon from his work on movies like “Happy Death Day” and “Freaky.” He’s really excited about this opportunity. But it’s not confirmed if he’ll also be involved in writing the film. We don’t know for sure if James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, who wrote the last two Scream movies, will be back.
Paramount, along with Spyglass Media Group, is expected to continue distributing the film, but we don’t have an official timeline for the production of Scream 7. Even though Scream VI came out quickly after the previous movie, it looks like fans might have to wait until 2025 for Scream 7 to hit theaters.
In this article, we will guide everything you need to know about the Scream 7 Release Date, Cast, Plot, and Everything We Know
When is Scream 7 Coming Out?
Originally, Scream 7 was planned for a 2024 release, following the annual schedule set by Scream 2022 and Scream VI. While a 2024 release is still on the table, there’s been a bit of a delay in the production.
One reason is the unexpected departure of Radio Silence as the director. Additionally, filming probably won’t begin until the ongoing SAF-AFTRA and WGA strikes are officially resolved. So, while 2024 is a possibility, it’s not guaranteed, and the release date may depend on how quickly these issues are resolved.
Scream 7: Latest News
Fans of the Scream franchise have been eagerly speculating about whether Neve Campbell will reprise her role as Sidney Prescott in Scream 7. Up until Scream 6 in 2022, Neve Campbell had been a fixture in every Scream movie, with Sidney Prescott being a central character.
While Scream 6 proved that the franchise could succeed without Sidney, her absence was strongly felt. Many fans believe that her character is deeply intertwined with the story of Ghostface and deserves a proper sendoff.
The team behind Scream 7 seems to share this sentiment, and recent comments from original Scream writer Kevin Williamson suggest a desire to bring Neve Campbell back into the fold.
One of the main obstacles to Neve Campbell’s return for Scream 7 is her salary. During an interview with the Happy Horror Time podcast in September 2023, as reported by ComicBook.com, Kevin Williamson discussed Neve Campbell’s decision not to appear in the most recent Scream movie and expressed hope that a way could be found to bring her back for Scream 7.
Scream 7 crew: Who is directing the movie?
In August 2023, it was revealed that Scream 7 is officially in the works, with Christopher Landon, the director behind Happy Death Day, leading the project. This news came as a surprise to fans since Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known as Radio Silence, were initially expected to direct after successfully reviving the franchise with the 2022 release of Scream.
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett had directed both Scream 6 and the 2022 Scream, and many fans anticipated their return for the seventh installment. However, Christopher Landon is now taking the director’s seat, and he shared the news on Twitter, hinting at exciting developments to come.
While Radio Silence, including Chad Villella, will continue as executive producers, Spyglass Media Group is in charge of producing the film, and Paramount is expected to serve as the distributor once again.
However, there’s a key challenge on the horizon: the movie currently lacks a writer, and this issue won’t be resolved as long as the Writers Guild strike continues. As more information becomes available, we’ll be sure to provide updates on the project.
Where Can You Watch Scream 7?
The odds are high that Ghostface will continue their tradition of horror movie trivia games on the big screen in Scream 7, especially considering the remarkable box office success of Scream VI. The sixth installment achieved an almost unprecedented feat by becoming the highest-grossing film in the entire franchise, raking in $108 million.
It was the first and only entry to surpass the original film’s box office record of $103 million. Given the substantial financial success of the latest installment, it seems highly unlikely that Paramount would opt not to release Scream 7 in theaters.
Speaking of Paramount, a streaming release after a highly anticipated and virtually guaranteed theatrical run is quite likely. Scream 7 will almost certainly join the other six entries on Paramount+ at some point in the future, allowing fans to enjoy the scares and thrills of the iconic horror franchise in the comfort of their own homes.
Scream 7 Cast: Who Will Return?
A new core group of characters has been established and is likely to return for Scream 7. This group includes Melissa Barrera as Sam, Jenna Ortega as Tara, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy, and Mason Gooding as Chad.
Scream 6 clearly identified these characters as the new central figures of the franchise and even referred to them as “The Core Four.” This is a trend that is expected to continue in the upcoming film.
In Scream 6, among the new characters, the only one who survived until the end was Sam’s new love interest, Danny, portrayed by Tom Segarra. In the Scream movies, boyfriends typically don’t fare well, but given that Segarra’s character turned out not to be Ghostface and survived, there’s a strong possibility he’ll return.
Scream 6 also saw the return of some important legacy characters, with Courteney Cox reprising her role as Gale Weathers and Hayden Panettiere returning as Kirby Reed, both of whom survived by the end of the film.
Notably, Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, did not make an appearance in Scream 6, marking the first film in the series in which she was absent.
Neve Campbell chose not to return, citing concerns that the compensation offered did not reflect her significant contribution to the highly successful franchise, which she has been a part of since its inception. While Scream 6 focused on the new characters, fans continue to hold out hope that Campbell may make a return to the franchise in Scream 7.
