A video that is being widely shared on social media shows Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, in Paris for a global financing summit. In the video, he takes an umbrella from a protocol officer, leaving her in the rain. The video is about 45 seconds long and shows Sharif, wearing a grey suit, trying to grab the umbrella from the officer. After a few seconds, he successfully takes the umbrella and walks alone while the officer follows him in the rain. She continues to follow him until they reach the entrance of the venue.
People on the internet had different reactions to the incident. Some suggested that the protocol officer could have used another female officer’s umbrella, while others referred to a previous incident in Iran where someone else held the umbrella for Sharif and Pakistani Twitter users reacted strongly to it. Some users joked that watching Sharif reminded them of Mr. Bean, while another user commented that he had taken the officer’s umbrella.
The global financing summit, called the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact, began in Paris with over 300 participants from different sectors. The participants are expected to discuss financial issues related to climate change through six round table discussions. These discussions will cover topics such as reforming the international financial system, building trust, forming partnerships, and creating a favorable environment for the private sector.
Before the summit, Prime Minister Sharif met with several world leaders, as well as heads of the UN and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He highlighted the challenges faced by developing nations, especially due to climate change. During his speech at the event, he emphasized the importance of a fair and equitable distribution of financial resources worldwide to help alleviate the suffering of developing nations and promote peace.
