‘Sisu’ Movie Review: An Efficient Action Drama

Jalmari Helander’s latest English-language movie, Sisu, lives up to its title, which means tenacity in Finnish. Set in World War II, the film tells the story of Aatami, a Finn who has found a stash of gold that he is determined to protect at all costs, even if it means facing off against a Nazi battalion. With bare-knuckle action and minimal dialogue, Sisu is a fast-paced, mayhem-filled thriller that efficiently rolls out its surprises.

Jorma Tommila plays Aatami, a killing machine with little personality, but a reputation for being immortal. Instead of exploring Aatami’s backstory, the film focuses on his innovative ways of dispatching enemies, enhanced by impactful scenes of squelching guts and exploding entrails. Aksel Hennie, who plays the brutal Bruno, provides some much-needed comic relief.

At just 93 minutes, Sisu is an exercise in economy, with Helander knowing when to move the film from unlikely survival drama to straight-out farce. While some may find the movie’s lack of depth a drawback, it’s hard to argue with the film’s ability to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

In conclusion, Sisu is a thrilling, action-packed movie that delivers on its promise. It’s not a film for everyone, but those looking for a bare-bones thriller with impactful action scenes will find it an enjoyable ride.
