The world’s biggest cruise ship is almost ready

The world’s biggest cruise ship is almost finished being built in Finland. It recently went out into the water for some tests before it’s delivered in October 2023. The ship is called the Icon of the Seas and it’s really huge. It’s as long as almost 1,200 feet and weighs about as much as two CN Towers.
When the ship starts sailing in January 2024, it will have room for about 5,610 passengers and 2,350 crew members. The ship’s most special feature will be the world’s largest waterpark at sea. It’s called Category 6 and it has six water slides that break records. But if people prefer to relax, they can also use the boat’s seven pools and nine whirlpools.
Mind-blowing biggest cruise ship
The new cruise ship, called Icon of the Seas, is currently being built in Turku, Finland at the Meyer Turku shipyard. It is scheduled to join the Royal Caribbean fleet on October 26, 2023. The ship is being hailed as the pinnacle of Royal Caribbean’s advancements, incorporating the latest technology and benefiting from the company’s 50 years of experience.
The current largest cruise ship in the world is Wonder of the Seas, also owned by Royal Caribbean, which made its first voyage last year. Wonder of the Seas is slightly smaller than Icon of the Seas, measuring 1,188 feet in length and having 18 decks.
Royal Caribbean International aims to make Icon of the Seas the ultimate family vacation experience. The ship has undergone its first round of sea trials on June 22, where various aspects such as the engines, hull, brakes, steering, noise, and vibrations were tested. Despite a slight delay in departure due to windy conditions, the trials were successfully completed as planned.
‘The perfect home base’
The ship offers over 40 options for dining, drinking, and entertainment, and many of these are included in the cruise price. It has 20 decks and eight different areas to explore, each catering to different types of vacationers. There are special areas for families and even an adult-only dueling pianos bar, which is a first for Royal Caribbean International.
There are 28 types of accommodations to choose from, including more options for families, different layouts with ocean views, and more space for larger groups. The cruise line has spent a lot of time designing these accommodations to make them the best they can be.
Icon of the Seas is also special because it’s the first ship from Royal Caribbean International to use liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fuel cell technology as part of their efforts to move towards clean energy in the future.
2,600 workers per day
Every day, around 2,600 workers have been working hard on building Icon of the Seas. During the sea trials, which lasted for four days, hundreds of experts were on board to evaluate how the ship performed.
Royal Caribbean has planned another set of sea trials for later in 2023 to continue testing the ship’s capabilities.
Record-breaking sales
There’s a lot of excitement and talk about the ship, and as a result, it has broken records for advance sales. Michael Bayley, the head of the company, mentioned during their financial update that Icon of the Seas has been the most successful new product launch they have ever had.
Icon of the Seas will offer seven-night trips to the Eastern and Western Caribbean from Miami throughout the year. Each cruise will include a visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay, which is Royal Caribbean’s amazing private island destination. Additionally, the island has recently expanded to include Hideaway Beach, providing even more fun and relaxation for travelers.
