Could a proper Season 9 of The Vampire Diaries ever release new episodes to the world?
Indeed, “The Vampire Diaries” concluded its original series on March 10, 2017, after a substantial eight-season run, totaling 171 episodes. The series finale featured significant moments, including Stefan sacrificing himself to eliminate Katherine and save his brother Damon, Elena living a content human life, and Bonnie embarking on a globe-trotting adventure. These notable moments marked the conclusion of the characters’ journeys and added closure to the narrative.
Will Season 9 of Vampire Diaries Ever Happen?
For fans hoping for a Season 9 release of “The Vampire Diaries,” it’s probably best not to get too hopeful. In July 2016, as reported by KSiteTV, Julie Plec, co-creator and executive producer of the show, confirmed that the CW had given them the freedom to end the series on their creative terms. This suggests that the decision to conclude the show was made intentionally, and there might not be plans for further seasons.
“It’s so rare for a show to get to last this long, and what a privilege that Mark Pedowitz and Peter Roth have allowed us to choose the time to end the journey on our own creative terms… It’s been eight of the best years of my life. I will miss it terribly, but I’m so proud to be here to see it to its proper end.”
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter in March 2017, Julie Plec admitted that “logistical stuff” played a significant role in the decision to end the show when they did. This suggests that practical considerations and possibly challenges behind the scenes influenced the timing of concluding “The Vampire Diaries.”
“There were a lot of things that went into [the decision to end the series]… Some logistics, some contractual, where you were just like, ‘OK if this person doesn’t come back, is the show still going to be good? What if they do come back, but we don’t know until the end?’ A lot of that silly stuff you’re not supposed to talk about. Logistical stuff…”
The producer openly shared that they wanted to carefully plan out Season 8, and if it felt like the right time for the show to conclude, then it should indeed come to an end. This indicates a thoughtful and intentional approach to the decision-making process regarding the series.
“What it came down to for us was, let’s start talking about the season and see what it feels like, see what stories we want to tell, see where those stories take us… And then if it feels like it should be over, then it should be over.”
Revivals and reboots have become popular in the entertainment industry, and some fans might hope for a similar fate for “The Vampire Diaries.” However, in June 2021, TMZ caught up with Kat Graham, who played Bonnie in the series and asked her thoughts on a reboot. Her response suggested that there wasn’t much enthusiasm for the idea.
“I don’t think Nina and I are interested in that… But I think our friendship will be forever. I think that’s the dream.”
Graham continued to share that her friendship with co-star Nina Dobrev, who played Elena Gilbert, is still strong today. When it comes to “The Vampire Diaries,” she emphasized that “some things end.” This statement suggests a recognition that certain experiences, including the show, have a natural conclusion and may not need to be revisited or rebooted.
“I think if they know that the stuff that they saw on screen and the friendship and the love that I have for her is real, then I think that’s all people need to know. Some things end, right? Seasons end, but friendships will be forever. She’s a really great person, and she’s really strong. And she always really had my back on that show. And I needed a lot of support sometimes, so she really was there for me in every aspect of that. She’s also incredibly strong and really had the back of me and the other women on that show.”
Nina Dobrev herself conveyed to Andy Cohen in 2019 that she believes the show had a satisfying and awesome ending. This indicates that, from her perspective, the conclusion of “The Vampire Diaries” was well-executed and provided a sense of closure.
“I think the show had a satisfying, awesome [ending] — for me, it was great because I got to go back and be a part of the finale, say goodbye, and pay homage to the characters,” she said. “So, I was really happy with it, for sure.”
Paul Wesley, who portrayed Stefan Salvatore, openly admitted on the Watch With Us Podcast that he believed they had told all the story that needed to be told. Ian Somerhalder, the actor behind Damon Salvatore, shared the same sentiment and agreed with Wesley. This suggests a consensus among key cast members that the narrative of “The Vampire Diaries” had reached its natural and complete conclusion.
Season 9 of Vampire Diaries Is Unlikely
The chances for Season 9 of “The Vampire Diaries” seem unlikely. The original series concluded with Season 8 on its own terms, and it also gave rise to two spinoff shows.
The first spinoff is “The Originals,” which focused on the original family of vampires. The second spinoff, “Legacies,” follows characters like Hope Mikaelson, Lizzie Saltzman, and Josie Saltzman, including the return of Matthew Davis’ Alaric Saltzman from the original series.
While “Legacies” included familiar faces from “The Vampire Diaries,” the spinoff was canceled in 2022 after four seasons, bringing the world of “The Vampire Diaries” to an end.
Interestingly, had “Legacies” continued for a fifth season, there were plans to introduce the child of Elena and Damon, a significant development for fans. Although this didn’t happen, it leaves room for potential future projects under the guidance of Julie Plec, the show’s creator.
All episodes of The Vampire Diaries are currently available to stream on Peacock and Max.
