WhatsApp is a messaging app that lets you send messages to your friends and family. It has some exciting plans for the future. Recently, WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, announced a new feature called WhatsApp Channels. This feature will be added to the messaging service and will make it even better.
WhatsApp Channels is a tool that allows administrators to send messages, pictures, videos, stickers, and polls to a large group of people. It’s like a one-way broadcast where only admins can send messages, and others can follow and receive them. You can easily find and select channels to follow from a directory. These channels can be about things you are interested in, like your favorite sports teams, hobbies, or updates from local officials.
In a video promoting the feature, WhatsApp describes Channels as a way to privately follow topics that matter to you. They show examples like “carpentry tips,” “traffic,” and “weather.” When Channels is launched, some of the partners who will have their channels available include popular soccer teams like FC Barcelona and Manchester City, as well as organizations like the International Rescue Committee and the World Health Organization.
We don’t know the exact date when the new feature will be available, as WhatsApp has not provided that information yet. However, they did mention that Channels will first be introduced in Colombia and Singapore before being made available in other countries.
How Channels will work on WhatsApp
Channels will be shown on a new section in WhatsApp called “Updates.” It will be separate from your regular chats, so you won’t get mixed up between the two. The good thing is, admins won’t have the power to add people forcefully to their channels. So, you won’t be bothered with updates from any groups you don’t want to be a part of.
Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, wants Channels to be the most private way to send broadcast messages. They want to make sure your privacy is protected, just like in regular WhatsApp chats. The history of channels will only be kept for 30 days and will disappear automatically after that.
When you follow a channel, the admin won’t see your phone number or profile picture, and neither will the other followers. Your information remains private. Additionally, WhatsApp wants to support channel admins by giving them opportunities to make money through payment services and promote their channels in the directory to get more attention.
Overall, WhatsApp wants to make Channels a private and secure way to receive updates, without compromising your privacy.
