Many people liked “The Accountant” when it came out in 2016. Do we know if there’s going to be a sequel?

Warner Bros. released “The Accountant.” It’s a movie about Christian Wolff, played by Ben Affleck, who is a really good accountant working for criminals.

Even though the movie didn’t make a lot of money when it first came out, more and more people have become fans. Many of them want to see a second movie, “The Accountant 2.”

When Is The Accountant 2 Releasing

“The Accountant” came out in theaters in 2016. Just a year later, Deadline confirmed that Ben Affleck and director Gavin O’Connor would be back for a sequel. The screenwriter, Bill Dubuque, and producers Lynette Howard Taylor and Mark Williams were also ready to return.

In 2021, during an interview on CinemaBlend’s podcast, O’Connor shared more details about the progress of “The Accountant 2.” He mentioned that, even though the movie had been in development for a while, he had recently finalized the deal in 2021 to make the film.

“There will not be a ‘Way Back sequel,’ but we are doing an ‘Accountant’ sequel. We literally just closed that deal. We’re doing ‘The Accountant again.'”

There wasn’t much news about “The Accountant 2” for a while. Then, insider Daniel Richtman reported that the movie was officially happening at Amazon. He confirmed that Gavin O’Connor and Ben Affleck would be back for the sequel.

Since it’s been in the works for a long time, there’s a chance that filming for “The Accountant 2” could start around 2024. The first movie started filming in January 2015 and was released in October 2016, taking about 18 months from start to finish.

Even if filming were to start in January 2024, and following a similar schedule as the first movie, “The Accountant 2” might not be in theaters until around October 2025. However, it’s unlikely that filming will begin that early, so fans might have to wait until at least December 2025 to see the sequel.

Who’s Cast in The Accountant 2?

As mentioned before, Ben Affleck has already been confirmed to come back for “The Accountant 2.” In a 2020 interview with Collider, he expressed his excitement about reprising his role, saying that he would be thrilled to do it. Affleck mentioned how he had a great time working on the first film.

“But it is one of the few movies that I’ve worked on, that I’d be thrilled to work with Gavin again and do that again. I had a great time. It was a lot of fun. It was an interesting twist on the genre and I’d love to do it.”

With the lead role for “The Accountant 2” confirmed, fans are curious about which characters and actors from the first movie will be returning.

According to the 2016 Deadline report, Jon Bernthal is likely to reprise his role as Braxton, Christian Wolff’s brother, and is expected to have a more significant role in the sequel.

Other characters expected to return include Anna Kendrick as Dana Cummings, J.K. Simmons as Ray King, Cynthia Addai-Robinson as Marybeth Medina, Alison Wright as Justine, and Jeffrey Tambor as Francis Silverberg. They played substantial roles in the first movie and are anticipated to be part of “The Accountant 2” as well.

What Will Happen in The Accountant 2?

In the mentioned CinemaBlend interview, director Gavin O’Connor shared his plans for not just “The Accountant 2” but also a third film.

O’Connor hinted at the expanded role of Jon Bernthal’s character, Braxton, in the second movie. He mentioned that Braxton would have more screen time in the sequel, suggesting a more prominent and developed role for Jon Bernthal’s character in “The Accountant 2.”

“Yeah. Yeah. So, I’ve always wanted to do three because what, the second one’s going to be more with — we’re going to integrate his brother into the story. So there’ll be more screen time for Bernthal in the second one.”

The director also shared that “The Accountant 3” will have some notable similarities to “Rain Man,” indicating that Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal are likely to be brought back once again in the future for what he described as “a buddy picture.” This suggests a continuing collaboration between Affleck and Bernthal in a film with a dynamic partnership similar to what was seen in “Rain Man.”

“And then the third movie’s going to be, I call it, ‘Rain Man’ on steroids. The third movie is going to be the two brothers, this odd couple. The third one is going be a buddy picture.”

If “The Accountant 3” is set to be a “buddy picture,” it’s likely that “The Accountant 2” will act as a setup for that installment. It will still include the action and high stakes that were present in the first movie.

“The Accountant” was known for its surprising plot twists, and while it’s impossible to predict what the twists in the sequel might be, fans can reasonably expect that “The Accountant 2” will also deliver unexpected moments that will leave them astonished.

The Accountant 2 is reportedly in development, and the first film is currently available to stream on Hulu.
