We don’t know yet when Enola Holmes 3 will come out on Netflix, but the people who make the movie have shared some information about it.
Enola Holmes 2 followed the adventures of Millie Bobby Brown’s character as she solved crimes and tried to become famous on her own, apart from her famous brother, Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill).
People mostly liked the sequel, and it got a good score of 93% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. In November 2022, Enola Holmes 2 was the most-watched movie on Netflix globally, with 64.08 million hours streamed in 93 countries.
When Is Enola Holmes 3 Releasing?
In November 2023, Scott Stuber, who is in charge of Netflix Film, shared with Collider that they are working on the script for Enola Holmes 3. He also spoke highly of the talented Millie Bobby Brown:
“You know, [Millie Bobby Brown’s] such a great homegrown star for us. I mean, obviously, ‘Stranger Things’ is huge for us in that, and watching her grow as an actress. We have a film called Damsel with her in the spring, which I’m really excited about, [from] Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Then, getting that character right. The Holmes IP is weirdly elastic. Obviously, Warner Bros. did an incredible job with Downey and Jude Law, so this idea that we can extend that IP with her is exciting. So, we’re working once again on a screenplay to try to get that.”
Stuber finished his statement by saying, “I’d like to do another one,” hinting at the possibility of a third Enola Holmes movie.
We don’t know when Netflix will release Enola Holmes 3 because Millie Bobby Brown has a busy 2024 with promotional duties for Damsel (which premieres on Netflix on March 8, 2024) and a year-long production schedule for Stranger Things Season 5.
Since Stranger Things Season 5 is a top priority for Netflix, production for Enola Holmes 3 might not start until filming for the final season of the show is finished. If production begins in early 2025 at the earliest, there’s a chance the third movie could premiere in late 2025. Enola Holmes 2 was announced in April 2021 and released on November 4, 2022, taking about a year and a half to complete. Following a similar timeline, Enola Holmes 3 might take at least that long, suggesting a possible late 2025 release, likely in November.
Who’s Cast In Enola Holmes 3?
Enola Holmes 3 is expected to feature many familiar faces from the previous movies, with Millie Bobby Brown reprising her role as the main character and Henry Cavill returning as Sherlock Holmes. Helena Bonham Carter, who plays their mother Eudoria, is also set to return, along with Susie Wokoma as Edith and Adeel Akhtar as Lestrade.
Although Sam Claflin’s character Mycroft Holmes didn’t appear in Enola Holmes 2 due to scheduling conflicts, there’s a chance he might make a comeback in the third movie. Enola Holmes 2 director Harry Bradbeer mentioned to Collider in November 2022 that they “would love to have [Sam Claflin] back” for the follow-up.
“If there was a future one, we would love to have him back. But that was just the practicalities of life.”
The post-credits scene in the sequel revealed that Himesh Patel’s character, John Watson, will be joining the story. John Watson is known as the best friend and loyal ally of Sherlock Holmes.
Here is a list of the expected cast members of Enola Holmes 3:
- Millie Bobby Brown – Enola Holmes
- Henry Cavill – Sherlock Holmes
- Helena Bonham Carter – Eudoria
- Susie Wokoma – Edith
- Adeel Akhtar – Lestrade
- Sam Claflin – Mycroft Holmes
- Sharon Duncan-Brewster – Moriarty
- Himesh Patel – John Watson
What Will Happen in Enola Holmes 3?
The main storyline of Enola Holmes 2 didn’t leave viewers hanging, so the third movie could take the plot in various directions.
At the end of the sequel, Enola set up a new office for her detective agency in London and begins a romantic relationship with Louis Partridge’s character, Tewksbury.
According to Millie Bobby Brown in Enola Holmes 2’s production notes, as reported by Digital Spy, the sequel primarily emphasized Enola’s development as a detective, rather than exploring themes of self-discovery like in the first film.
“We’ve really upped the ante from the first film. The first film was about self-exploration, and personal growth: a young girl loses her mother, goes to find her mother, and has very misogynistic brothers, one of whom, Sherlock, is a work in progress. I loved that approach to the first film. It really gave everyone a peer-eyed view of Enola. But this film isn’t about Enola. It’s about Detective Enola Holmes.”
Enola Holmes 3 has the potential to blend both aspects of self-exploration and detective work, providing a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy by showcasing the growth of the titular character.
In terms of the antagonist, Sharon Duncan-Brewster’s Professor Moriarty might play a prominent role, posing a challenge for both Sherlock and Enola. Moriarty, as Sherlock’s arch-nemesis, could engage in an initial clash with the Holmes siblings in the trilogy’s finale.
With Himesh Patel’s John Watson introduced in the post-credits scene, a potential side story could explore the development of the bond between him and Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes.
Although Enola Holmes 2 didn’t follow the events of Nancy Springer’s second book, the third movie could draw inspiration from the third entry, “The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets.” This storyline involves Enola’s quest to avoid completing school duties while helping locate the missing Dr. Watson. While it’s unclear if Enola’s school-related journey will be explored, the narrative surrounding the missing Dr. Watson offers an intriguing angle to further develop the friendship between him and Sherlock in Enola Holmes 3.
The first two Enola Holmes movies are streaming on Netflix.
